Dr. Stacie Bumgarner is one of the founding members of the Education Group reestablished in September 2010. Stacie has taught undergraduate courses in Genetics and Genetics Laboratory as a lecturer at Boston University and as a lecturer and then Assistant Professor in the Biology Department at Suffolk University. Stacie began collaborating as an outside consultant with the Software Tools for Academics & Researchers (STAR) Program in MIT’s Office of Educational Innovation and Technology (OEIT) when she implemented the educational software tool StarGenetics into her course curriculum while at Suffolk University. She joined the Education Group and OEIT as a Research Scientist in September 2010, and became actively involved as one of the domain specialists helping to develop new educational software with the STAR Program. Within the Education Group, she is engaged in curricular development, outreach, and research to support MIT’s Biology education initiatives. Stacie is a laboratory-trained biologist. She has worked as a researcher in the laboratories of Professor Michael M. Martin (University of Michigan Department of Biology) and Dr. Irene H. Maumenee (Johns Hopkins Center for Hereditary Eye Disease at the Johns Hopkins Hospital), and she completed her doctoral and postdoctoral research in the laboratory of Professor Gerald R. Fink at the MIT Department of Biology and the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research. Stacie is also a visual artist, generating works in oil, watercolor, charcoal, and with digital technologies.
