Across Boundaries: Innovation & The Future of Education

HHMI Biology Department Seminar Series: A Conversation with Professor David Botstein

Professor David Botstein is the Director of the Lewis-Sigler Institute of Integrative Genomics at Princeton University. Professor Botstein joined the faculty of MIT in 1967 and developed an innovative series of undergraduate courses called “project labs,” which emphasized current research questions and cutting-edge techniques. In 1987 he moved to Genentech, Inc. as Vice President – Science, and in 1990 he joined Stanford University’s School of Medicine, where he was Chairman of the Department of Genetics. In 2003 he joined Princeton University, where he has helped developed an innovated science curriculum called Integrated Science. Integrated Science is a multidisciplinary introductory science curriculum intended for students considering a career in science. The curriculum breaks down traditional disciplinary barriers to foster deeper connections between various scientific disciplines. The curriculum is founded on the expectation that much of the most important science of the future will lie in areas that span two or more disciplines.
Professor Botstein’s research has centered on genetics, especially the use of genetic methods to understand biological functions. In 1980, Botstein and three colleagues proposed a method for mapping genes that laid the groundwork for the Human Genome Project. Professor Botstein was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences in 1981 and to the Institute of Medicine in 1993. He has served on many policy-making and peer-review committees.

NEW THIS SUMMER! The MIT Teaching and Learning Laboratory (TLL) will be offering this program in an intensive two-week format, running May 25-June 6, 2011. MIT graduate students who wish to develop their teaching skills are invited to participate. The program is designed for students with a variety of interests and career goals, from those who wish to develop better skills to support their teaching at MIT to those who are planning careers in academe.
