Dr. Gaël McGill
Seminar Topic: Molecular Movies: Exploring Hollywood’s Tools for Biovisualization
Seminar Date & Time: Thursday, May 5, 2011 @ 3:00 pm
Location: MIT 4-237
Co-hosted by: OEIT and The Education Group
3D visualizations have become an integral part of experimental biology and can serve as powerful tools of intuition as the need to integrate information from diverse fields becomes paramount. In addition to their roles in scientific communications and education, cellular and molecular visualizations can also directly inform the research and discovery process. Dr. McGill discussed ongoing visualization research in this area, with focus on how he and colleagues are adapting Maya – one of the entertainment industry’s workhorse software packages – for biovisualization. Dr. McGill is the Director of Molecular Visualization at the Center for Molecular and Cellular Dynamics at Harvard Medical School, where he also teaches scientific visualization. He is the founder & CEO of Digizyme Inc. and the creator of the online portal Molecular Movies and the Molecular Maya (mMaya) Toolkit. Dr. McGill completed his Ph.D. at Harvard Medical School in the Division of Medical Sciences (Biochemistry & Molecular Pharmacology) and postdoctoral fellowship at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
